outdated churches, hide your ficus trees!

I just finished this re-face proposal for a church in the area.

15 mock-ups, a new record for me.

This is my 4th church re-face proposal I've made, so I guess I need to add a tab to my website so I can show the before's and after's.

Speaking of after's, they're not in the Flickr set, but I'll post just one and you'll get the idea of what it looks like right now.
Yep, there it is. So now go back to the Flickr set and go "ahhhh" :)

Just like the other 3 churches, I don't know if they'll actually do what's in the proposal. Here's hopin.'

(it's 2:30am, do you see that on my timestamp? arg.)

Tonight I made

Aren't I supposed to be saying no to projects?

Of course I am.

And I almost didn't do this one.

But then, I can't say "no, little burgeoning Christian school, I won't help you make cool t shirts."

I just can't.

So here they are, the boy and the girl version (following the general color parameters I was given)

cross my fingers and say a prayer

Another church in the area is kinda overhauling their stuff, how they run things and what they do, etc.

I was asked to draw up some plans on how to polish their look. It's kind of a dream of mine to be able to take a church that hasn't changed at all in 30 years and make it look hip and help bring young people in. There is a rough $5K budget for it, so keep that in mind, I can't totally buy all new stuff or make major architectural changes.

The downside is that it's pro bono and I'm up past midnight working on it. I know there's tons more to do on it. There's a gym and sunday school rooms, and a lounge area-- but I think if they actually follow my guidelines, then I will devote more time to it and do the rest. We'll see if they'll gonna give up those silk plants and 70's furniture, in favor of lamps and ebony stain...

These are pics of how it currently looks:

today I made

This flag was a special request from my high school friend Jason who's serving in the Army over in Afghanistan right now.
I think it's a Star Wars flag? Something like that? I'm not sure, but apparently this is what it's supposed to look like, kinda. I have no idea if it'll fly, the fabric is slightly heavy, and my sewing leaves alot to be desired. But I dunno if he actually wants to fly it or not.

I mailed it today and I think it's probably not gonna get there in time for Christmas. And the peanut butter cups that went with it, I hope they don't get mangled on the way.

poster of the wee hours

This is the rough draft, I know there are problems with it.

inside folding part of of the poster. It folds open twice.
And then the back is below, when it's all unfolded...

cards that empower!

My friend is starting her own eco-cleaning service. I'm doing her "corporate identity."

The company name is still up in the air.

fun.

add to my tiny video portfolio

I made this video to kick off the MOPS session this morning. I was kinda proud of it, although most of the credit goes to whoever made the Chevrolet commercial 60 years ago.
And the hot pink starburst was supposed to look on-purpose cheezy, but I think it looked accidentally cheezy. Oh well. I made in a couple of hours.

my favorite thing to do

It's midnight and I did a friend's business cards and made her a blog to match, even though she totally didn't ask. It's just a compulsion and fun for me, so I stayed up to do it. And I'm gonna print and round the corners on a few cards she can use this weekend, but we'll get real ones printed soon.

Here's the blog

I wanted to name her business The Flour Power Baking Co. But she picked SweetTooth instead. Still not bad.

This was the card I made for that company name. Never flew out of the nest.
I think I'm gonna do a trade for Kid C's cake in September.

more designs

UPDATE: After review, I have to change the blue and orange photos in the "Missing the Point" image. I'm feeling lazy, but okay, I see their point. It's going to require more brain power...

Today I was feeling very yellow-blue contrast-y.

Summer Saturday night parties held every week for whoever.
This is just the banner, but there are more parts to it.

Our latest series. I was challenged to "do a design unlike any previous ones."
Voila, I think its pretty different.

...but she's my friend and I want her sermon to look good on Sunday. I want it to look better than anyone's!

and for my next trick...

for our school compassion ministries, I made the following items:

comedy event invitation

If you are Allison reading this, you may notice that your boyfriend is featured as one of the performers.
Well, I needed to represent funny people that will be in the improv troupe. I didn't have any photos of those people looking funny. But I did have one of Ken!

t-shirt for volunteers at schools

I can't wait for them to print these. I want one. I have been wanting to use a MLK quote on a shirt for a long time. And booya, there it is.

tonight I made

I got a cold sore from stress, so I thought I should get some stuff crossed off my list.

Tonight I finished the laos trip shirt and made a new logo for the RUTS guys.

(new web banner)

Please, may there be no more re-dos.

today I made

The next series is about 1 Corinthians 13, the one that you hear at lots of weddings:

This is the manlier design, the second one I made.

The is the first one I did, which is kind of feminine, but then the title is logically feminine and silly. So we had to get a new title.

Why can't it be feminine you ask?
We have a shortage of Christian men on a global scale. And they scare easily. So you have to make it manly or men think church is a Jesus-sewing-circle or something like that.
Irritating and sad but true.

But if I have learned anything from Battlestar Galactica, it's that women love religion.

And also the news teaches me that men are drawn to militant faith.

Anyway--

We're having a big bbq after our community wide easter egg hunt the day before Easter. I think it's a great idea.

And here's the banner on the email that goes out to all of the members of WG.

easter promo card

The concept I can't take credit for, another church in AZ did it first. But here it is and I think made it look alot cuter than the original one.

peru young life shirt

One of the missionaries we support down in Peru, Christen, hosts teams to help with her ministry there.

She asked me to design the shirts for her teams to wear and here's what I came up with.

I took the ideas she had for what she wanted on there and tweaked it a little bit.

snoozer, fer' sure

I just got done painting and it's almost 2am.

It's a 5 x 8 banner to hang in the auditorium for our new series.
I have to hem it in the morning, when it's dry, so that white edge you see in the pic will be gone.

Majorly boring. But it's a banner, and it's for 4 weeks so *hey.*

speaking of marketing

Today we were trying to come up with a way to market our next series coming up in October that covers sex, Porn Sunday, dating, divorce, etc.

And we decided to call it "Let's Talk About It," with "It" being both sex and the elephant in the room.

(here's what I have so far for the graphic)

And so how to market it, how to market it...

And I said "what if we did cocktail napkins with our information on it, like something you'd get from someone at a bar-- or matchbooks!"

So I found these bikini-bar-garish-colored matchbooks that we're gonna print the series image on. And then on the inside stamp it with a custom stamp that looks like a handwritten note with our website and dates, etc.

hooray! I hope the CMS people will be pleased.

cute! especially when placed on your welcome mat.

So this year's Beautiful Day festivites include an eco-friendly component.

Joanne, bless her, asked me to help with the marketing.

Because who else am I but a tree-hugging Christian who loves marketing?

Even though I volunteered to do a cloth diaper workshop, our green community effort is instead a neighborhood clean up complete with recycling, etc. And giving away garden hose rubber rings, that are supposed to save water.

So how to market this to the neighborhood around WestGate?

Tiny recycling bins!

These are my favorites, the wheelie carts.

But I'll settle for these.

Plus, they're imprintable. So we can put our little logo on it.

And of course the rubber rings and clean-up info inside.

I hope we have enough budget for them. I'm worried, we don't, but I'm waiting to hear back about it.
