is there *any* age for "dark materials"?

I was just browsing Amazon.com's children's books and I clicked "ages 4-8."

At the top of the list of books recommended for kindergarden-ish age children is:
His Dark Materials Trade Paper Boxed Set

Are you opposed to them in general, or just for the kindergarten set? (Which, I agree, is ridonkulous.)

I'm not one of those crazy "you can't read harry potter, because it's the work of the devil!" parents. But I mean, I'd rather my kids (after the age of 5!) read Tolkien or Lewis if fantasy is the subject.

Oh! I wasn't accusing you of being crazy. ;) I was just curious. I read all three of them and had NO IDEA they were kind of about atheism. Possibly because I'm an idiot, but probably because I was too absorbed in the story. But I hated the last one. HATED. So much hate.

I don't like unhappy endings.
