It kinda looks like a flower. I didn't see the reel until I read your post.
It's way cool though.
I thought it might be a film reel...but that's only cause I know that the project is for...I think if the "spokes" of the reel had hard edges it may be more obvious?
Tho it's pretty cool on its own...and subtly a film reel.

Being a person who manages a film transfer dept (where we transfer the old 8mm & 16mm film), I have to politely say, as an expert in the field, that it does not look like a film reel.
It looks like a wheel for a car to me.
When I first glanced at it, I briefly thought it was an orange sliced in half.
